Healthy Hair, Skin, & Nails

The outside is a reflection of the inside.

The health of your skin, hair, and nails is a direct reflection of your overall health. So much of the beauty world is focused on topical creams, chemical peels, and ways to enhance skin, hair, and nails externally, missing the important link to the internal state of the body. Not to mention, a vast majority of these products contain harmful ingredients and synthetic chemicals that further contribute to the underlying issues, taxing the liver and other body systems. While they may appear to “work” and target the skin “issue,” they simply act as a temporary “fix” to a deeper condition. What we don’t often realize is that the health and condition of our skin, hair, and nails is simply a reflection of the health of our internal organs, especially the liver.

All skin, hair, and nail conditions are linked to the health of the liver. In a world where we are constantly exposed to synthetic chemicals, toxins, and pathogens our livers are working harder to filter our blood. The foods we eat directly impact our liver health. High-fat diets, which have been deemed “healthy” and are vastly promoted by the media, contribute to the sluggish and stagnant state of our livers. When the liver is sluggish and stagnant it cannot filter the toxins, pathogens, and chemicals from the blood as efficiently– becoming overburdened, these toxins then overflow into our lymphatic system. The lymphatic system lies superficially to the skin and when it becomes clogged with the toxins, chemicals, and pathogens it pushes them out of the body by way of the skin… So the vast array of skin conditions illuminate an overburdened liver and a stagnant lymphatic system.

Hair

The health of our hair reveals what lies beneath the surface– the quality and condition of our liver and internal organs.

Greasy Hair — caused by the presence of Streptococcus bacteria in the body

Frizzy Hair — indicates that the adrenal glands need more support

Brittle Hair + Hair loss — reflect an overburdened liver and adrenal issues

Caffeine compromises hair health as it stimulates the release of adrenaline. Adrenaline is hard on the liver and  impacts the texture and thickness of the hair follicles. Focusing on adrenal support is a foundational way to support our hair.

Supplements for Hair Health:

Ashwagandha —a powerful herb that can support adrenals and transform the hair health.

Skin

Skin conditions like acne, eczema, rosacea, and psoriasis stem from a pathogen in the body and reveal an imbalance in the liver; a sluggish, stagnant liver, more accurately.

Clear, glowing skin begins within. It starts with eating whole, vibrant plant-based fruits and vegetables that are full of antioxidants,  minerals, vitamins, and compounds that nourish the liver and adrenal glands. So many of us have become deeply dehydrated and our skin has become dry, losing its luster. One of the first and simplest steps in healing our internal organs, thus clearing our skin, is to focus on hydration.

Foods to Support the Skin: beta-carotene-rich foods: papayas, sweet potatoes, mangoes, melons, raspberries, leafy greens, bananas, + potatoes. Foods containing living silica that are especially beneficial for the skin include asparagus, artichokes, and kale stems.

Nails

Our nails comprise one of the primary immune defenses of our immune system. They serve to protect us and prevent pathogens; viruses and bacteria from entering our bodies. They also are important as they are porous– allowing oxygen and water to pass through.

Nail conditions can highlight deficiencies and aries that need more attention and focus in our bodies.

White spots, ridges, incomplete half moons are a sign of zinc deficiency.

Brittle nails indicate a sluggish liver and a zinc deficiency. Excess adrenaline in the body compromises the liver and leads to brittle, dry nails.

A big part of creating healthy hair, strong nails, and glowing skin is creating awareness; gaining a better understanding of what is behind the conditions and how your body functions. Another key component is eliminating health hindering foods and substances that compromise our liver health. Lastly, incorporating health promoting foods and supplements is a way to create lasting results and vibrant health internally, which is then reflected externally.
